Social Media Marketing Mistakes

Social Media Marketing Mistakes

What started as a peer to peer online community quickly grew into an excellent place for business to connect with their customer base on a personal level. The various social networks provide a great platform for companies to directly reach and communicate back and forth with their target audience. Like it’s traditional advertising predecessor, social media marketing networks can be selected to match the interests of the customers, but now, instead of talking to or down at current and potential buyers, the dialog is open, 2-way and instantaneous. We know it is important and that it can be viewed as an online party. But with this great new power, comes even greater responsibility. If you make a mistake in your social media marketing, it will be known much quicker, spread much faster and cause even more damage.

Narcissism

No one wants to hear just about you. That is not two-way communication, it is just a monolog, and might as well be old school broadcast advertising. Whenever I talk to my grandfather, all he does is talk about his ailments for the first 30 minutes of the conversation. At some point he finally gets around to asking me about myself, but by that point, I am so annoyed with the conversation, that I keep my answers very short.  An important social media marketing tip is to recognize that being social requires a dialogue.

Not a team effort

It is not your personal opinion that followers are looking for. It is your company they are talking to. So how can the voice of the entire company be just one person? You can certainly have one person in charge of updating and communicating with your audience, but make sure that they are not only just putting out their own opinion, but rather getting input from the rest of the company.

Goldilocks Issue

It can be very difficult finding that perfect mix of the right amount of social posts. You do not want to inundate your followers wall with updates so they get annoyed that you have taken over. At the same time, you do not want to post so infrequently that they completely forget about you.  Think about why social media marketing is important and ask yourself if what you are about to post is part of your larger content strategy.  You want to make sure that you are posting the right amount and making the most of your posts, but keeping them timely and well spaced.
